Session No 3 of HN unit: Raising Awareness of Adult Literacies (H3P8 33)
Great to have a new learner in the group from West Lothian College. This session focused on the digital world. We looked at digital shopping - this generated numerous requirements before even accessing the site and then reading and understanding the information and icons, etc generated more learning needs to complete the task and get optimum usage of the system.
In small groups we examined information displayed through leaflets and posters for adult learning and literacies. We visited different sites such as the Glasgow Women's Library and Glasgow Clyde College.
Discussions were fascinating and the list of issues around navigating the sites and understanding the key information were highlighted and fed back in the session.
This session highlighted contemporary issues in using reading, writing and numbers in the context of the digital realm, which is where applications are, for universal credit, doctor consultations, employment opportunities and applications, college, etc.
We have been tasked with responding to the Definition of adult literacies (assignment 1) and also creating a leaflet highlighting what we offer in our services in terms of adult literacies and learning (assignment 2)
Reflecting on the journey so far in terms of this course is only an aspect of the experience for me but it is enlightening through engaging with new and current learners including experienced colleagues, and volunteer tutors.
Many adults are finding themselves without the skills they need to change careers or develop new skills.
In practice I am frankly shocked at the difficulties encountered in accessing appropriate learning spaces in communities and technological devices for learning. The basic resources required to support learners and ensure that they can develop the skills required modern day society.
