Second Session of Raising Awareness of Adult Literacies

Margaret introduced the deficit model and lifelong learning model of learning. This was a very interesting input and led to stimulating and insightful conversations.

In our smaller groups we were asked to share the impact of adult learning and the barriers to participating in adult learning from our experiences in practice.

This was followed by another activity where we read different definitions of adult literacies and shared out thoughts on them, again in our small groups and responded to our views on the current definition/s of adult literacies and the different learning opportunities provided under the theme of adult literacies.

I found both definitions, not in tune with the 21st century world in terms of digital citizenship and literacy. The first definition is from 2010 - over 13 years old. I shared this with the small group and full cohort and others agreed.

After the meeting, I engaged with my colleague to get support to access the teams group for the PDA.

At last it was great to be on it and I uploaded the Adult Literacies curriculum framework for colleagues to see a more up to date Scottish government document on Adult Literacies.

With technical issues around seeing 3 short videos, we were given links to films to watch at our convenience.
